about

Why Ephemeral, I hear you ask...

Well, as usual, I was wondering what to call my next album and track names.

I decided to use more heavy metal names and I found a bunch on wikipedia that have very short half lives and are sometimes referred to as "ephemeral"

Each piece is basically a drone which I then layer on top one or more sequencer lines and, sometimes, some incidental noise.

All sound sources are hardware based but effects are delays and reverbs added "in the box." Hardware used includes my Eurorack modular system plus a Novation Nova, Roland JP-8000 and Oberheim OB-12, all virtual analogue synths from back in the early 2000s, and a cre8audio West Pest, an amazing little semi modular synth.

The first piece, Nobelium, was created using just the West Pest and "in the box" delay and reverb.

By the time I had started working on Ephemeral I was doing livestreams on YouTube, very much "warts and all" stuff, so one day I started developing these tracks during those livestreams. Not every step, but certainly the early days and sometimes beyond. By the time I got to tweaking and mastering I decided that that would no longer be of interest to anyone.

A big hats off and thanks to everyone who tuned in to those livestreams. I found working with having friends looking over my shoulder while fumbling and bumbling around a great experience and I intend to continue doing that as long as I am able.

I hope you enjoy
